October 13, 2008 PRESS RELEASE
HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (Sunday, October 12, 2008) The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series wrapped up an exciting week of action this weekend with the completion of the ASP WQS 6-Star Rio Surf Pro International pres. by Oakley and the ASP WQS 4-Star Ocean & Earth Pro pres. by La Caja de Canarias. Gabe Kling (St. Augustine, FL), 28, was this week¹s top American performer with a fifth place finish at the Rio Surf Pro.
Kling¹s performance at the Brazilian event was a critical result in his ASP WQS campaign. The Quarterfinals finish launched the former ASP World Tour surfer from 23rd to 15th on the ratings, which means he is temporarily in position to compete as part of the top 45 next year.
The Floridian¹s notable performance included heat wins over Brazilian standouts Raoni Monteiro (Saquarema, BRA), 26, and Jadson Andre (Natal, BRA), 18, before losing his Quarterfinals heat to Michel Bourez (Rurutu, PYF), 22.
³It was a heat with only few waves so I think it was my luck to get two good ones,² Kling said. ³I remember Noronha but in the water it makes no difference, I was only thinking about winning, it doesn¹t matter against who. I have to move on to improve in the ratings."
Kling has overcome injury and illness throughout the first half of the year and has significantly improved his standing on the ASP WQS throughout the second half of the season. The regular-footer will look to better his chances of qualification for the 2009 ASP Dream Tour with another solid result at next week¹s ASP WQS 6-Star Prime event, the La Santa Surf Pro at San Juan Lanzarote in the Canaries.
³I feel pretty good,² Kling said. ³It has been a long year but there are still five contests left and I'm a few results away so I am hoping stuff will go my way. I am looking forward to canaries, hopefully we will get some swell because that wave is sick!²
Brett Simpson (Huntington Beach, CA), 23, was also a standout in Brazil. Simpson posted a ninth place finish at the event and moved up to No. 20 on the ratings.
Che Stang (Carlsbad, CA), 25, took top honors for North Americans at the Ocean and Earth Pro with ninth place finish. Stang cracked the top 100 with the result, moving him into the No. 95 spot amongst his competitors.
In other ASP WQS news, Nathaniel Curran (Oxnard, CA), 24, will be back in action after a brief sabbatical from the grind. Curran officially qualified for next year¹s ASP Dream Tour earlier this year in Europe and hopes to have a strong finish to his stellar season.
³I guess the pressure is off to make the tour, but I still want to finish strong,² Curran said. ³I¹m going to Europe for the last two 6-Stars and then Hawaii.²
The ASP WQS will continue next week with the 6-Star PRIME La Santa Surf Pro at San Juan Lanzarote in the Canaries from October 14-19, where surfers looking to qualify for the 2009 ASP World Tour will be out to claim some of the valuable ratings points on offer at the event.
